The bottom line is if your like to fish, California is an anglers paradise. Any type of fishing that you can imagine is available within the state of California. And with its thousands of miles of coastline, there are good runs of both salmon and steelhead as well. Many states within the United States don’t offer fishing for these wonderful fish simply because of their proximity to large bodies of water. Yep, as far as the sport of fishing goes, California is a hard state to beat.

The heaviest concentrations of crappie exist in Canada primarily in the southern regions & the lower 48 states because crappie & panfish prefer warmer waters necessary for their survival. In Canada, ice fishing for panfish is a huge sport that fishermen go to great lengths to bring out there ice houses on their favorite spots on the lake usually in 6 foot to 12 foot deep when the lakes are frozen. These waters are typically warmer and even with ice covering the lakes there are still plenty of insects, plankton & minnows for panfish to feed on.

Ice fishermen will put their minnows in a cooler or even a Ziploc bag with slushy ice and put them in their coat pocket and the minnows will stay alive all day. A lot of Ice fishermen will use a portable depthfinder to lower down in the holes so they can actually see the panfish hit their bait! These waters are very clear unlike the far southern regions where the waters are murky in a lot of areas.

Crappie fishing in the southern regions means bigger crappie due to warmer seasons and longer days and fantastic aquatic vegetation and crappies feeding periods last longer so the crappie can grow to 20 plus inches long and exceed 4 pounds in size!

A great way to rig up your rod & reel for shallow water crappie fishing is using a bobber with a small hair jig in 3 foot to 12 foot of water, this technique allows you to cast the jig without losing your bait so you don’t scare the crappie. A light breeze is great for using a bobber because with the ripples on the water will give the crappie jig a little movement underwater that mimics a natural insect that crappie won’t be able to resist to entice a strike.

If you are in a cove or crappie fishing off of a pier and the water is like glass then give it an occasional twitch for natural movement, you will want to adjust the bobber for the crappie jig to float 1 to 2 feet off the bottom. This will work the same way for minnows except you will want to add a small weight 6 inches above the hook so your minnow with sink to your desired depth. When your bobber starts moving away or disappears underwater, set the hook! Always make sure that you have sharp crappie hooks to get the best results.

Crappie fishing has been proven to be a sport for the entire family because they are a lot easier to catch and reel in than any other species of fish. If you are crappie fishing with jigs you can start out very simple and low cost by adding several crappie jig colors using green, white, black, chartreuse & florescent colors depending on the water clarity. Try this crappie technique, take your crappie jig and cast over crappie structure without a bobber and slowly bring it back over the structure for some excellent crappie fishing!

How to create your own crappie honey hole

Crappie frequent structure . If you prepare correctly you can prepare your own crappie "honey holes". The key is to create crappie structure that only you have the location. You can sink brush, plastic and even home made pvc brush piles.

The very best brush to sink is "willow tree" braches. They seem to create month long crappie honey hole swarms, I am not sure why, it just my experience.

Make sure you cut long cuttings with at least 7 to 10 branches at least 3 foot long with lots of small little branches. Sink you branch cuttings or any of the other artificial structure you plan to sink, with a cement block or something heavy so it sinks directly below where you put it in the water. Also , the brush won’t shift if it is anchored down. I always use a cement block with a short rope about 2ft long, tied to the main cut branch. Crappie are just like bass they like to sit in cover structure and wait for their prey.

The best time to create your crappie honey hole is in the fall and very early spring (right after ice out).

For best results create your crappie brush farms in three different depth locations. Mark your locations to sink brush in the shallows, mid depth locations, and deeper water. Make sure you find a spot that is not easily fished. Make sure you drop your brush when no fisherman are watching. If your honey hole gets a lot of fishing pressure the crappie may move out to other fishing locations. I always look for places that would not interest casual boaters.

You are probably asking why? Well by using three different locations you create crappie honey holes for different parts of the fishing season. If you can find a spot where the bottom starts deep and gradually goes to shallows you can build your three locations inline. Just mark each location with a GPS point, that way you can come back again and again without wasting any precious fishing time. If you have young children this is an excellent way to get them interested in fishing. Kids are impatient, but if you take them to a honey hole where the action is almost instant, you will nurture their interest in a wonderful sport.

This technique will work no matter where you are located at. Crappie love brush and structure as their habitat no mater what part of the country you live in. Make sure you check with your local laws to find out what is legal to sink for structure.

Fishing Spinnerbaits

Fishing spinner baits what a great change of pace for your crappie fishing.

Spinner baits are an excellent change of pace when fishing for crappie. When we start thinking of crappie fishing most anglers assume we are going to talk about the use of jigs or live baits. Fishing Spinnerbaits is actually a very easy way to fish that offers easy depth control and a added movement not seen on the jigs or live bait rigs. If you use a few simple rules and tips, fishing with spinners can be a very productive method to catch crappie. I am going to identify below some simple spinnerbait set ups and how to fish them.

When and What spinnerbaits to use for crappie:

Offset spinners are best used in spring when the crappie are in the shallows.

Spinners with the blade under the body can be fished any time at all depths.

Inline spinners are best used in shallow water in open water areas.

Inline spinners with the blade on the tail are best used for vertical jigging in deep water.

More spinner tips:

Big crappie are very big eaters and if you are out for the big fish use lures in the 1/4oz to 1/2oz size range. Make sure they have large blades for a lot of flash. Now remember when you fish these large spinners you won’t be catching any small crappie. If you have a passion for multiple casts with limited hits , then by all means use the larger spinners. Just don’t expect to catch a lot of fish with these lures, but when you get a hit you can expect the fight of your life landing a big crappie. Fish these artificial baits from the shallows to about mid depth.

One excellent easy way to fish the best of two worlds is to attach a flashy blade in front of your hook on your minnow rig. Fish this rig with a heavy sinker in deep water and a split shot in shallow water. This rig needs to be retrieved after you cast very slowly. The blade doesn’t need to rotate just move back and forth showing a flash to the crappie.

Heres’ a key tip:
Spinnerbaits are better fished slowly for crappie. Start very slow and increase your retrieve until you get the right speed for your particular habitat situation. As a rule of thumb, slow is better then fast.

Here’s a key tip for smaller fish:
If you want a lot of action and you are not as concerned about catching the big slabs then use spinner baits in the 1/16ox to 1/32oz size range. When you use the smaller baits very your retrieve from very slow to fast. Some of the smaller crappies will be very aggressive and hit your lure when retrieved at a faster pace.

Weedless spinnerbaits are good fit for cover areas, such as brush, rocks and weeds. You can put the spinner right on top of the cover. It will bounce off because of the weedless protection around the hooks.

The stop and go retrieve is a good bait presentation to crappie who are attacking while the bait is falling. Cast your line then crack 5 or six turns quickly, stop for 3 or 4 seconds and then repeat. Make sure you take up all the slack when reeling the second and following reeling sets.

Depth control is important when you are using spinnerbaits, or any bait presentations for that matter. After your cast, do a countdown before you start your reeling. You can determine your different depths bye the number of counts. This is a must step to identify where the crappie are. The crappies eyes can only see bait above, or level with them. Start your casts shallow then increase your counts for deeper reeling.

Follow the simple techniques and tips above and you will catch crappie. The more you use these resources, the you will find yourself start to develop you own variations. Now you are ready to fish spinnerbaits for crappie.

Crappie fishing Minnesota lakes and rivers is just one of the great fishing past-times in Minnesota. Leech Lake is a popular vacation destination in Minnesota. Many people travel here every year to catch a variety of species. This lake is a great place to fish, especially for younger anglers. Most fishermen come here to catch walleye and there are plenty of walleye in Leech Lake of all different sizes, although, most walleye you catch will be around 14 to 20 inches long. You can also catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, rock bass, perch and muskie.

Walleye and northern pike are abundant in this lake. Experienced fishermen should not have a problem catching walleye and pike on Leech Lake. There are flats, dropoffs, humps and other types of structure that will hold walleye and northern pike. Find some areas with some deeper weeds and you will catch both species.

Largemouth bass are not targeted by most anglers that visit Leech Lake. With the walleye and northern pike fishery, many fishermen don’t even consider fishing for largemouth bass. This lake has some nice largemouth bass. Bass in the 3 to 5 pound range are fairly common. Find sheltered bays with some weed growth and you should find some bass. Because there is less fishing pressure for largemouths, once you find them, you should get plenty of strikes.

Muskie fishing can be extremely good in the spring and the fall. Fish the shallow bays in the spring and try working crankbaits along deep weed edges in the fall and you will catch some fish.

For the younger anglers, try fishing for perch, crappie, bluegill and rock bass. Rock bass and perch are loaded in Leech Lake and they can be a lot of fun if you are using light tackle. Small jigs tipped with leeches and worms will produce rock bass and perch. Spinner rigs tipped with leeches will also work, especially for bigger rock bass.

Crappie fishing usually involves ‘jigging’, or snapping the rod up and down continually to lure the fish toward the bait, and if your fishing rod isn’t light, it’s going to tire your arm and wrist out rather quickly. Crappies are fairly small fish, so a light fishing rod and light line are fine to use. Due to the type of fishing it is, comfort should be the main concern when it comes to a crappie fishing rod.
