Walleye and northern pike are abundant in this lake. Experienced fishermen should not have a problem catching walleye and pike on Leech Lake. There are flats, dropoffs, humps and other types of structure that will hold walleye and northern pike. Find some areas with some deeper weeds and you will catch both species.
For the younger anglers, try fishing for perch, crappie, bluegill and rock bass. Rock bass and perch are loaded in Leech Lake and they can be a lot of fun if you are using light tackle. Small jigs tipped with leeches and worms will produce rock bass and perch. Spinner rigs tipped with leeches will also work, especially for bigger rock bass.
Crappie fishing rods – The lengths of crappie fishing rods vary according to individual preference, but one thing about crappie fishing rods that needs to remain constant is that they must be light. 
The day I caught my first fish was a day the fish weren’t biting. At least that’s what my Uncle Jake said and Uncle Jake knew everything there was to know about fishing. In my 12 year old mind; he was the Crappie King of Mississippi!
Usually at the beginning of October I will start by fishing piers. Not just any pier, deep piers with good cover around them, like a boathouse, double-deckers, anything that produces good shade. We will be shooting these piers with a spinning reel and very limber rod. Any reel will work, but the rod has to be like a hickory stick.
Now lets start fishing since I am through bragging! Go out to your favorite lake, pull up to a good deep pier and start shooting. Once the jig hits the water try to tighten your line because it may only take a second to get a bite, and sometimes you have to let it go all the way to the bottom. Most of your strikes will come on the fall so be ready at all times. If no strike on the first fall then work it back to the boat by lifting your rod tip and letting it fall again. Work the bait all the way back to the boat because lots of people put timber at the end of their piers.

Basically, we timed the crappie spawn wrong and had to fish deep the entire week. It is a lot harder to find crappie in 16 to 20 feet of water than in 2 to 5 feet of water along any type of wooded cover. We ended up finding a bunch of brush piles and if we were on the brush piles we caught fish. If we would cast 10 to 15 feet away from the brush piles we couldn’t get a bite. The key to our success was moving from brush pile to brush pile catching one or two off of each spot. We ended up catching plenty of crappie, although the bite was a tough one, and 5 crappie were in between 13 and 15 inches. Most anglers
